At the approach of winter solstice, I was called toward a ritualistic re-read.ย
I often find myself revisiting familiar pages, words of comfort and even words of personal confrontation as the days grow shorter and the trees shed. If you are someone who has attended Ritual Club or any of my other class offerings, you have probably heard me refer to books, recommend books and even pull quotes for practices that really hit home for me.
This week, I reopened Geneen Rothโs Women Food and God for the fourth time since it was published. I was drawn to this book originally by a dear friend who had attended a retreat with Geneen and thought I would be interested in her correlation between how we eat and what we believe.
A big part of my winter practice is observing my rituals from the year, my habits, what I am doing every day and learning how it can affect how I feel and how I work in this world. I have also loved learning others perspectives on mindful consumption of all kinds, including food consumption. As a Black femme in America, my relationship with my body, with scarcity, with food and access has been complicated. I truly believe that many of us in the West have an equally complicated relationship with deprivation culture in general as well as gratification.ย
This book may surprise you, and you may relate to words you wouldnโt expect. One this is certain for me, that the deeper we dive into curiosity and love with our bodies, the better our experiences with our bodies will be.ย
Whether you just want to hang around for the pull quotes, insight or possibly comment conversation (taking place in substack), or if you decide to pick up the book yourself, I am happy you are here.ย
